Assam is the heart of the North East region of India. This region is Sandwiched between Bhutan, Tibet, Myanmar, and Bangladesh at the Eastern tip of India, it is approachable by air from Delhi and Calcutta, and by rail from any part of India. The most convenient gateway airport and rail station is Guwahati, the capital city of Assam state. You can also fly in to Dibrugarh ( Mohanbari) for Upper Assam, Dimapur for Nagaland, and Jorhat for Kaziranga. 

The North East is a Pandora's box of surprises. The panorama of the Himalayas, forests, rivers, bazaars , monasteries, exotic people with varied cultures languages, and beliefs, are indeed too vast and complex to be spanned by one tour. Assam lies astride the mighty Brahmaputra River, whose lush 700 Kms valley is sandwiched between the Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, in the North, and the hills and plateau of Meghalaya, in the south. Here the Ahom civilization flourished for more than six centuries. 

It is the heart of North Eastern India. It has vast forests, miles of tea gardens, great rivers, wildlife, temples, flora, and a gentle and cultured people full of dance and music, which are adept at many handicrafts.

The Assamese Capital City sprawls on the Southern bank of the mighty Brahmaputra, whose northern shore is invisible due to the vastness of the channel. It is the gateway to the North East States and is connected to Delhi and Kolkota by air and to all parts of India by rail and road.

Guwahati features an interesting bazaar, which is the main market of the North East States. Main sights are: -

• The Kamakaya temple: a fine example of Assamese architecture, the temple is known for its power and enrichment. It is also a wonderful viewpoint.
• Saulkuchi is a silk weaving center famous for its golden colored Muga silk.
• Hajo: a unique pilgrimage center revered by Hindus, Muslims and Buddhist.
  

The 340-sq Kms Park is located on the South bank of the Brahmaputra 233 kms from Guwahati; it is famous for its 1000 plus, population of one-horned Rhinos. Tigers are also present in sizable numbers. Other attractions include the wild buffalo, magnificent swamp deer, hog deer, wild boar, Hoolak gibbon, Capped Langur, and Badger. Amongst the birds, the Crested Serpent Eagle is common, also the Pallas Fishing eagle, Grey Headed Fishing Eagle, Crane, Great Adjutant Stork, Bengal Floricab, Bar Headed Goose, Whistling Teal and Pelican can be seen in the wild. Jeep and Elephant Safari, is the mode of exploration.

Located 250 kms from Guwahati and 80 kms from Kaziranga the Park lies astride a 25 kms stretch of river Jai – Bhoroli, it is a treasure house of sub-tropical flora, on the border of Arunachal Pradesh. It preserves, Leopard, Tiger, Bison, Elephant, Wild Boar, Himalayan Bear, capped Langur, Giant Squirrel, and the endangered Hispid Hare, White Winged Wood Duck, Hornbill, and other birds. An Eco camp provides a base for jungle safaris for flora, wildlife, bird watching, boating, rafting and angling, on a catch and release basis, and visit to the Tippi Orchid Research Station.

Majauli Island – Hindu monasteries and centers of art

The worlds largest River Island is reached by ferry 100 kms from Kaziranga and 320 kms from Guwahati. It is famous for its twenty-two 15th Century "satras". These are Hindu vashnite monasteries functioning as centers of Assamese arts. The worship of Lord Vishnu is through dance, music and poetry.

A land of rolling lush green hills, it is located at an altitude of 1500 meters. Pine forested hills, terraced fields, serene river vales, lovely waterfalls, and incredible range of flora, exotic plants, and a warm and friendly people makes Meghalaya a wonderful holiday destination. This " land of the rain clouds" has the wettest place on earth. The climate is pleasant all year around with cold winters in Dec – Jan.

The Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia tribes, people Meghalaya. Until the arrival of the British missionaries, they were animists, who practiced human sacrifice. Christianity is now the dominant religion of the three tribes. An interesting feature is that the society is matrilineal, and is believed to have originated from the mythological "mother of the root". Women therefore dominate the society. Children take the mother's name.

It is reached by driving 3 hrs from Guwahati. The sights of Shillong are: -

• Tir": Shillong's unique institution – the archery stakes it the form of tribal archers shooting repeatedly a set amount of arrows, in four-minute bursts, at a cylindrical bamboo target. The gamblers set their stakes, to predicting, the last two digest of the number of arrows that stick to the target – this being a matter of luck.

• Waterfalls & gardens: Elephant Falls, set amidst fern covered rocks, Crinoline falls, which holds bonsai,and orchids and Lady Hydari Park HydariPark modeled an Japanese garden, with a forestry museum and a mini zoo on the premises.

• Shillong peak, for a good view.

• The sacred groove of Mawphlang: a part of Khasi tribal legend has rare orchids, plants and monoliths, untouched through centuries.

• "Lewduh": The quaint market place, where only ladies conduct all business.
• Uniam Lake: is a water sports complex.
  

Located 56 kms from Shillong, it was at one time, the wettest place on earth (the tittle is now held by Mawsynram, just 12 Kms away as the crow flies). Believe it or not, 104 cms rainfall was recorded here in a 24-hour spell in 1876. At Cherapunji, Chera market is famous for its honey and tribal jewelry, and Nahkalilkai water falls, and the Mesmai water falls and caves are worth exploring.

Day 04: Drive to Nameri Eco Camp 85 kms in 02 hrs. Choice of angling, boating, bird watching, jungle walk. Visiting tribal habitat or relaxing at river beach. Overnight in camp.

Day 05: At Nameri. Elephant safari, or escorted walk through the park. Looking for wildlife, birds and flora. Overnight in camp.

Day 06: Drive back to Guwahati, 240 Kms in 06 hrs. Drop at airport.
