Here is an opportunity to stay in a tranquil and unpolluted atmosphere with a family on an Island called Chennamkary - Where the only means of transportation is by boat and bicycles. The home is located 10 kms from the well known market city of Alleppey (also called Alappuzha), in the fertile delta region of three rivers. The main economy of this region is cultivation of rice, coconuts and fishing. The island lies one meter below the level of the surrounding waters. Dykes have been built to keep the water out. This has resulted in the locals employing unique farming techniques. One good example - For irrigation, there is no need to pump the water into the fields, Instead the water has to be pumped out. There is a constant battle with the waters to survive. Life is focussed on water and boats. You can see various kinds of boats such as cargo boats for different purposes, different kinds of race boats, dug-out canoes, motor boats, ferry boats, as well as the latest house boats - specially transformed cargo/rice boats for tourists. Boat races in connection with harvest and temple festivals, are a part of the local cultural life. You can also see master craftsmen who specialise in boat making. There are ancient churches and temples to visit, and ethnic folk music to hear - including boat songs for different moods. The people also make handcrafted products of bamboo and coir.
