ST/ 06: 15 Days Sikkim Singelila to Goche-la

  • Max Elevation: 5000 m
  • Grade: Moderate to strenuous
  • Period: May and Oct
  • Minimum of  04 persons permitted

The original Sikkim- Singelila trek has been modified to avoid crossing into Nepal, due to security concerns. Starting from Uterey, at 1800 m, and avoiding the the spine of the Singelila Range,  the trek crosses from the Khalej Khola Valley across the 2680 m high Naythem Ridge, to descends to the Rimbi Khola Valley, at Chongri Village, 2175 m. Thereafter begins an steep four days climb to attain the Dapheybir ridge, 4420m. Thereafter following the ancient grazing trail of the yak herdsmen, we trek through the grazing grounds of Gomathang, 3735 and Pangding, 4210, to reach  Dzongri meadows, on the ninth day. Baring the village of Chongri, there is no habitation. It is the domain of lakes, glacial valleys, gurgling streams, cascades, chiseled snow peaks, yak pastures, forests, Rhododendrons, wildlife, birds, and breathtaking views of 6000 to 8000 m high peaks of the Khangchendzonga group. From Dzongri the trek continues along the Praig chu valley, finally climbing  the Goche-la pass at 5000 m, for close up views of Khangchendzonga, glaciers and other great peaks. The return route is via Tshokha to Yoksum.

Trek tour can start and end at Bagdogra, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, or Gangtok.

Day 01: Bagdogra – Rinchenpong, 1500 m

Arrive at Bagdogra Aiport. Met by your Car with driver and transferred to Rinchenpong, in West Sikkim in 5 hrs. Overnight at the atmospheric Yangsum Farm

Day 02: Drive Rinchenpong - Uttery, 2320 M - Trek to Chitery, 2700 M.

Awake early for the breathtaking sunrise views of Mount Khangchendzonga. After breakfast drive 30 Kms to Uttarey, at 2320 M., in 02 hrs. Start the trek to Chitery. It is a 03 hrs steady climb through chestnut forests, on a good trail along the  Kulhait River Valley, ending in a stiff climb through mixed forests. We camp at a lovely level meadow amidst the forest.

Day 03: Trek Chiterey, 2700 M – Neytham, 3680 m.

Today we will climb steeply for 8 kms in 05 hrs to Neytham, 3680 m .Trail has to negotiate several spurs of the main ridge – rocky and steep. Camp overnight at a small camping ground, just below the ridgeline. Close by is the Dechan Phu sacred cave.

Day 04: Trek Neytham , 3680 – Chongri, 2175 m.

Crossing over the Naythan ridge , with good views early morning of the Khangchendzonga Range, the trail descends steeply for 10 kms in 06 hrs into the Rimbi Chhu Valley to the small village of Chongri. Camp near the village.

Day 05: Trek Chongri, 2175 m – Nayapatal, 2500m.

From the Rimbi Chhu, the trail starts ascending to the Danphebir Peak. For the next three days we will be climbing 2400 m on the Northern shoulders of the valley to an altitude of 4600 m . Todays ascent of 07 kms takes us to Nayapatal , 2500m. Overnight in camp

Day 06: Nayapatal, 2500 m – Yambong, 3735 m

A hard days trek, of 07 hrs as the trail ascends steeply in 12 kms.to reach the yak grazing ground of Yambong, 3735 m.  Overnight in camp.

Day 07: Yambong, 3735 m – Dui La, 4541m - Gomathang, 3735 m

Today we continue our arduous trekking, for 06- 07 hrs to cross over high passes. The rewards are breathtaking views. This crossing can be ice bound in the months of March to May and requires trail blazing to get animals and loaded porters across. Climbing up to the Danphebir Ridge, 4600 m, we join the ancient trail of the Yak herdsman connecting a series of passes with exotic names, and wild and beautiful Himalayan upland. Cresting the Danphabir Ridge, 4631 m, close to the  Dui la - the pass of the devil, 4541 m, with its howling high winds, passing through the Oma la – the milk pass, 4572 m, we pause to gaze at unforgettable views of the Sikkim Himalayas, and the plains and mountains of Bengal.. Descending from the Oma la to the yak grazing ground at Gamothang, is a very steep descent, along the Gamothang Chhu. On the way we pass the twin lakes called Ram-Laxman pokhri. The camping ground at Gamothang grazing ground, is a lovely site at the confluence of three streams, located in a forest clearing at 3735 m. Overnight in camp.

 

Day 08: Gomathang, 3735 m – Yangshep, 4 300 - Pangding, 4210 m

Todays 09 Kms trek starts with the trail climbing out of the Gamothang Valley, through forests, to reach the 4300 m high camping ground at Yangshep in 02 hrs. This was the favourite summer camping ground, of the Queen of Sikkim. It is a charming green clearing in a forest of Rhododendrons, with a stream running close by. Continue for trekking through wild Himalayan uplands, favored by yak graziers over the centuries, There are considerable ascents to the tops of ridges and descents. The trail dips into small-isolated valleys, crosses a number of streams, and Yak grazing grounds. It takes 4 hrs to reach the Pangding grazing ground.  This is a grassy upland, from where the view is truly magnificent. On a clear morning practically the whole of Sikkim comes into view. The Teesta is seen winding its way from the Great Himalayan Range in North Sikkim upto the plains. The entire Khangchendzonga group is visible. From the Kang la, northeastwards, easily recognizable are Little Kabru, the Twin Peaks of Great Kabru, Khangchendzonga, the Dome, the Forked Peak, Pandim, Jano, and Narsing. Many more of the lesser-known peaks are seen. To the South and East Darjeeling, Pamayangtse, Kalimpong, Namchi, Kewzing, and Dubdi Monastery are all visible. Overnight in camp.

Dzongri viewDay 09: Pangding, 4210 m – Dzongri, 4030 m

Todays trek will take us across the upper reaches of the Rathong Chhu to Dzongri. It is a 10 Kms scenic trek.and will take 6-7 hrs. The first 02 hrs take us to the Tegyapla Chhu, with a great waterfall 300 feet high, coming cascading down from the opposite mountain. The valley is a narrow gorge 2000 feet high, on either side and is beautifully wooded with silver pines and Rhododendrons. Climbing out of the valley on a steep track through Rhododendron for takes another two hrs, followed by an easy gradient gently uphill for another hour, to reach the upland plateau of Dzongri, 4320 m. Relax amongst grazing yaks . Overnight in camp.

Day 10: Dzongri – Thansing. 3800 m (5 kms in 3-4 hrs)

Wake up very early morning  and d trek to nearby Dzongri Peak, about 300m above the camp. This is the best View point for Mount Kangchenjunga and the surrounding peaks.

After a breakfast, set off on the trail along the right bank of the Prek Chhu river. After cresting the hill, the path drops into the river valley crosses over  a bridge to climb up the far side for an hour to reach Thansing is located below the slopes of Mount Pandim. The camp is set near the Prek Chu river. Overnight in  tents.

Day 11: Thansing – Lamune, 4000 m ( 4 kms in 3hrs)

The trail from Thansing climbs gently north, up the valley, along Alpine meadows. There are superb views of the south face of Kanchendzonga and the peaks of Pandim , Tingchinkhang and Juponu hover  above the valley. We camp a little below the Samiti Lake  at Lamune . After reaching camp, walk up the trail which skirts a series of glacial moraines and meadows to the emerald green lake at Samiti, 4,150 m.  Overnight camp at Lamune.

Day 12:  Lamune, 4000 m – Goecha La Pass, 5002 m – Thangsing, 3800 m 13 Kms in 8 to 9 hrs)

Start very early for the final 4 to 5 hrs climb to Goche la, 5002 m. Skirting the Samiti Lake, the trail begins with a gentle upward gradient for about half an hour, follows the glacial moraine and then drops to a dry lake at Zemathang. A rough scramble over rocks and boulders with a rise of about 400 m gets to the top of the Goche la view point. The walk to the pass takes about half an hour more.  The Goecha La pass is formed by a depression between Pandim and the Kabru spurs. It overlooks the Talung Valley and commands a very impressive view of the south face of Kangchendzonga. Trek down back  to Thansing. Overnight in Tents.

      

Day 13 :  Thangsing- Tsoka, 3050 m.  ( 6-7 hours)

After breakfast, walk   to the village of Tsoka either via Dzongri or through the shorter  trail leading through Phedang (if it is open)  On arrival at Tsoka, explore the village. Overnight in tents.

Day 14:  Tsoka- Yuksom ( 16 kms / 5-6 hrs)

After breakfast head back to Yuksom.  The trail  begins with steep descent through rhododendron forest via Bakhim. It takes about 5-6 hours to get to Yoksom.. Check in at the Tashi Gang Hotel for the night.
