Tholung Valley Trek

The Tholung Valley is located in the shadow of the 6888 Meters high Siniolchu, and the 5200 Meters Lamo Anden; this is virtually an uninhabited valley with a miniscule population (less than 50) of Lamas, yak herdsmen, woodcutters, cow and sheep graziers.

Glaciers, snow clad peaks, alpine lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, bio-diverse forests, cascading rivers and streams, twittering birds, and yaks are all there. Hiding in the deep forests, and in the rocky uplands are musk dear, Barking deer, Red deer, Blue sheep, Snow leopard, and many other forms of wildlife.

The Tholung Monastery was built in the early part of the eighteenth century. It contain rare and valuable scriptures and artifacts (referred to as "the treasures") of other monasteries. Latsun Chembo brought these “treasures”, here for safety from their original home in West Sikkim, during the seventeenth century, at the time of the Nepalese invasion. All the treasures are kept sealed in thirteen boxes, in the custody of the Shekhorchen Nangpa family of Tibetan origin, at the Tholung Gompa. These are exhibited once in three years.

The 4785 M high Kishong- la is located at the upper end of the Tholung Valley in the saddle between Yajulnamteng, 5643 and Lamo Anden, 5200 M. From Tholung Monastery three days of climbing through forests, rocky outcrops, cascading waterfalls, yak pastures and Alpine lakes brings us to the pass. The views are simply magnificent. Towards the East the ridge rises to the rocky pinnacles of Lamo Anden- just 3 kms away. Towards the West, the ridge rises to the 5643 M, high Yajuknamteng Peak 3 kms away. Further West 6 kms from the pass is the beautiful peak of Siniolchu. It seems god took special care when he created this peak. It is perfectly symmetrical and conical in shape – a triumph of mountain architecture. Its summit a mere needle seems to pierce the fabric of the blue sky. From Siniolchu the ridgeline continues to Simvo. 6811 M. The Jumthul Phuk glacier, and the South Simvo glacier can be clearly seen. On the horizon towards the North, are the peaks of the Great Himalayan Range on the Indo-Tibet border. Towards the south lie the yak grazing pastures, around the Kishong Chu, and the breathtaking view of the snow capped ridgelines enclosing the Tholung Valley, with cascading glacier fed streams and waterfalls. We stay in camps, amidst grazing yaks, surrounded by nature’s bounty.

We offer you two memorable trekking options. A leisurely Nature trek to the Tholung Gompa is a rare opportunity to explore Tholung - the "secret hidden Valley of Sikkim", which is still a restricted area, even for domestic tourists. This is a trekking excursion for those who love nature and want a different kind of holiday - far from crowds.

For the energetic we present the Kishong-la Trek. Join the chosen few who will climb through the scenic upper Tholung Valley to gaze at the splendid views of Himalayan peaks, Alpine lakes, cascading streams, grazing yaks, and get a glimpse of the lifestyles of the yak men.

The Tholung treks are arranged in association with the Shekhorchen Nangpa family. Peter Lobo or Chewang Penjo- a family member, will be your escort and guide. He along with his cousins, family retainers, yak-men, and glaziers will be involved throughout to give you a memorable experience. They and other family members will also be hosting our guests.

07 Days Tholung Valley Nature Trek

Open: Feb-May and Nov-Dec

Day 01: Pick up from Bagdogra Airfield. Drive to Kalimpong 80 Kms in 2.30 hrs. Overnight at Gurudongma House.

Day 02: Drive to Mangan 70 kms in 03 hrs. Local tour of Mangan. Stay Overnight with Sikkimese Family or Tourist Lodge.

Day 03: Sunrise view of Khangchendzonga, from Singhik . Drive to Lingsha, 800 M. 23 Kms in 2 hrs. Start Nature trek to Tsana Wilderness Lodge camp, 1573 M, in the Tholung valley - the "Secret hidden Valley of Sikkim". 09 Kms, in 03 hrs. Overnight camping.

Day 04: Continue Nature trek up the valley to Tholung Gompa 2600 M. 09 Kms, in 3 hrs. Visit Gompa and overnight at Tholung House Wilderness lodge, or in tents.

Day 05:  Walking exploration of Tholung Valley. 03-04 hrs Overnight at Tholung House/ camp.

Day 06: Trek back to Lingsha in 05 hrs and drive to Mangan in 02 hrs.. Overnight with Sikkimese family or hotel.

Day 07: Drive back to Bagdogra to board your flight or to Gangok to continue your Sikkim Holiday.
 

13 Days Kishong-la trek

Maximum altitude: 4785 M

Trek Grade: Moderate, Strenuous in parts.

Open Apr-May and November

Day 01: Pick up from Bagdogra Airfield. Drive to Kalimpong for overnight at Gurudongma House/hotel.

Day 02: Drive to Mangan 70 kms in 3 hrs. Local tour of Mangan. Overnight with Sikkimese Family or hotel at Mangan /Singhik.

Day 03: Sunrise view of Khangchendzonga, from Singhik View Point. After breakfast drive to Lingsha, 800 M. 23 Kms in 2 hrs. Drive through river valley with exotic flora and Waterfalls. Start Nature trek to Tsana Wilderness Lodge camp, 1935 M, in the Tholung valley - the "Secret hidden Valley of Sikkim". 9 Kms, in 3 hrs. Overnight camping.

Day 04: Trek to Tholung Gompa, 2600 M

Continue Nature trek up the valley for 09 Kms, in 03 hrs. Visit Gumpa and overnight at Tholung House Wilderness lodge, in rooms or in tents.

Day 05: Trek through forests and waterfalls to Camp I, 3600 M. 06 kms in 6 hrs.

Day 06: Trek to Kishong Cho lake Yak grazing 

ground. 04 kms in 4 hrs. Overnight at Camp 2

Day 07: At Camp 2: trek to Kishong-la, 4785 M and back 06 kms in 05 hrs

Day 08: At camp 2: Trekking exploration  05 hrs.

Day 09: Trek back to Tholung Gumpa.09 Kms in 05 hrs. Overnight at Tholung House or camp.

Day 10: Trek back to Lingsha in 05 hrs and drive to Mangan in 02 hrs. Overnight with Sikkimese family or hotel.

Day 11: Drive back to Bagdogra to board your flight or to Gangtok to continue your Sikkim Holiday.

Note : Special entry permits are required for these tours. First you have to get your visa endorsed for restricted area entry to Sikkim. Once this is done please send photo- copy of passport particulars and India visa, along with three passport photos, for us to obtain North Sikkim entry permit. Application forms will be sent on request. It requires 6 weeks to complete formalities.

·   All transfers as per itinerary by exclusive jeep

·   Accommodation on twin sharing, at Guest houses/trekkers huts/ 3-4 man tents with sleeping mats.

·   All camping facilities, all meals, accompanying guide, and porter to carry one personal rucksack, up to 25 kg in weight.

·    Trekking permits and National Park permits. 

Participants are required to bring their own trekking boots, extreme cold clothing, rainwear, and sleeping bags, and are charged extra for liquor, and personal expenses.

Deposit: 50 percent.
